Tanzania Safari in March

Lodge rates drop on March 1 at most camps. The calving herds are still on the southern plains. The long rains usually hold off until mid-month. Put those three facts together and you get one of the quietest bargains on the Tanzania calendar: roughly the first twenty days of March, when the wildlife is still running on February's engine and the prices have already moved to green season. The last week of the month is a different story, with mud, closures, and herds on the move. Book the first half.

Wildlife Conditions in March by Park

Southern Serengeti / Ndutu (early) then Central (late)

Good

Early March still delivers calving-season predator action with far fewer vehicles than February. From mid-month the herds drift northwest toward Moru Kopjes and the Seronera fringe, and the focus shifts to central Serengeti. Late-month black-cotton tracks turn heavy; 4WD is not optional.

Ngorongoro Crater

Good

The caldera stays abundant whatever the weather, which makes it the reliability anchor of any March route. Grass lengthens as the rains build and the descent road gets slippery, but game density holds. Crowds ease through the month.

Ndutu (NCA)

Good

Productive through early March as calving winds down. By the last third of the month the black-cotton mud sets in and most mobile camps dismantle until the next season.

Lake Manyara

Fair

Long rains thicken the vegetation and make spotting harder, but the birding is excellent with migrants still in residence.

Tarangire National Park

Fair

Game dispersed with the rains. Strong birding, muddy tracks late month. A dry-season park at heart; come back in July.

The March 1-20 Window Nobody Prices Correctly

Most operators and most guidebooks treat March as a single month and rate it 'transitional.' The lodges do not. Rates step down on March 1 at the majority of camps, a 25 to 30 percent drop from the January-February calving premium. The herds do not read the rate sheet: through the first two weeks of March they are still on the southern plains, the last calves are dropping, and the predators are still working the same ground as February.

That overlap, peak-adjacent wildlife at green-season prices, lasts roughly until the 20th. After that the rains usually arrive in earnest, the herds drift toward Moru Kopjes, the Ndutu mobile camps start coming down, and the trip becomes a different proposition. If you can only travel in March, aim at the first half and treat the second half as a photographer's special: storm light, empty parks, and a real chance of mud.

Rain Variance, Flexible Booking, and Ramadan 2027

The honest caveat about March is variance. In a dry year, the rains hold off and late March is quietly excellent. In a wet year, they arrive on the 10th and the second half of the month is hard work. Nobody can tell you in advance which year you will get. Because of that, March is the month where flexible booking terms earn their keep: we build March quotes with the cancellation and date-change terms spelled out per property, and we favour camps with all-weather access roads.

One calendar note: Ramadan 2027 runs from about February 18 to March 19, covering nearly the whole month. Mainland safari is unaffected, and for Muslim travellers March is actually a strong Ramadan safari month: quiet parks, cool overcast afternoons that make fasting days easier, and iftar in camp. Zanzibar extensions during Ramadan are quieter in Stone Town; the resort experience is largely unchanged.

Common Questions: Tanzania Safari in March

Is March a good month for a Tanzania safari?

Early March is excellent: the tail of calving season still produces predator encounters, and lodge rates drop 25 to 30 percent on March 1. Late March is a gamble, because the long rains usually arrive mid-to-late month and some camps close. If your dates are flexible, book the first three weeks.

Where are the wildebeest herds in March?

Early March, still on the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu. From roughly mid-month they begin drifting northwest toward Moru Kopjes and the central Serengeti, following the new grass. A guide who tracks daily herd positions matters more in March than in any settled month.

Is March too wet for safari?

The first half is generally fine, especially on the northern circuit. When rain comes it is usually an afternoon thunderstorm that clears within an hour or two, and mornings are rarely disrupted. The risk concentrates in the final week, and in remote southern parks. The honest answer is that March varies by year, which is why we favour flexible booking terms for this month.

Which parks work best in March?

The northern circuit: Ndutu and the southern Serengeti for the calving tail in early March, Ngorongoro Crater as the all-weather anchor, and central Serengeti as the herds arrive late month. Skip the remote southern parks like Ruaha and Nyerere until the rains end.

How much cheaper is March?

Roughly 25 to 30 percent below the January-February calving rates from March 1, and around 30 to 40 percent below the July-October peak. Park fees are fixed year-round, so all the saving comes from accommodation. Our 7-day Calving Season Safari starts from $2,600 per person and prices lower in March than in February for the same route.

Can I still see the migration in March?

Yes. Early March offers the end of calving in the south, and the second half offers the start of the northward march, with columns moving toward Moru Kopjes. You are watching a transition rather than a settled phase, which rewards a guide with current field information over a fixed itinerary.
